Friday Photo Swoon – Riveted by Ruffles

50 Years of Frills
The 1900s

Ah the ruffle. That flounce that no era could bear to leave out. Ruffles on skirts, ruffles on blouses, ruffles on dresses, even ruffles on underpinnings! We women (and men!) can't quite get enough of this texture building beauty block. I could have gone waaaay further back in time, but today, in expectation of this weekend's Sunday Snag, I wanted to bring you a taste of what our ruffled past has been (at least for the first half of the 20th century).

  1. Your little walks through history are always so much fun. :) I do love ruffles...on potato chips...on bathing suits...on clothes...you name it! Clothes used to be so feminine. Women from those periods would faint on their couches at the way gals now dress so androgynously in grungy/loose boyfriend clothes.

  2. Oh this is wonderful! The hats! The parasols! I just love seeing such early images no matter what the fashion. The stark differences between the 1910's and 1920's is very interesting.

  5. There is nothing more feminine than ruffles. For most of my life, I was forbidden from wearing anything remotely ruffle-like and that pained me. Literally physically pained me. Which demonstrates the power ruffles have.

  6. What I wouldn't give to own one of those over-the-top ruffled gowns. That'd be awesome in a photo shoot!

  7. Wonderfully fun, imaginative post idea, dear Jamie! I'm not above a good bit of feminine frill myself, and this post had me swooning through every decade!
