Propriety be damned, I found a freakin' UNICORN, people!! Usually, I try to keep my tone on these posts pretty soft and just quietly (but still excitedly) introduce you to one of my new creations. But! It's a UNICORN! How can you expect me to not be embarrassingly giddy?! This tiny magical wonder is an antique button. "Really?", you ask. Yes, really. I couldn't believe it either. It is nearly as rare to see one in an antique button as it is to see one in real life! Usually, the only unicorns on buttons are when they are part of a family or royal crest. One of my big reference books (2 volumes with thousands of listed buttons), only has ONE unicorn and it's this one.

Okay, I'll settle down now and tell you about it calmly...
This necklace, made with an antique button titled "A Unicorn", was made between 1880 and 1899 in stamped, pierced brass, and depicts a unicorn bursting through a scroll. There are remnants of the button's navy blue tint throughout, but it's mainly seen on the flat portion of the scroll. Attached to a delicate brass chain, this mythical creature can now share its magic with you every day!

Friday Photo Swoon – Riveted by Ruffles

50 Years of Frills
The 1900s
Ruffles Through the Eras ~ 1900s #antique #1900s #fashion #ruffle

Ah the ruffle. That flounce that no era could bear to leave out. Ruffles on skirts, ruffles on blouses, ruffles on dresses, even ruffles on underpinnings! We women (and men!) can't quite get enough of this texture building beauty block. I could have gone waaaay further back in time, but today, in expectation of this weekend's Sunday Snag, I wanted to bring you a taste of what our ruffled past has been (at least for the first half of the 20th century).

Thursday Thrill – Summer Fashion Recap: Part Two

Here is part two of my summer vintage fashion recap (see part one here). As I said last week, I'm only a year in so far when it comes to dressing in vintage. I've always loved the styles from eras gone by, but honestly, it never really occurred to me that I could dress that way. It really seems silly now, but I think you develop and grow as you age and some things just come later. For me, dressing this way has just been one of those "developments". I know myself better now and I think I'm more "myself" than ever. These styles have always been a love for me. Now I just get to express it and live it a bit more. I've felt more and more comfortable in my own skin the last few years and I'm really just enjoying life presently. My life is good.

Summer, in all her frilly, breezy, and light accoutrements, is leaving. She was a dear friend to me this year and I always enjoy her company, but she will soon be replaced with Fall. Let them shake hands and pass each other cheerfully for it will be a glorious exchange! Here's to a beautiful and happy Autumn!!
