Wordless Wednesday – Dance Competition

Competitions for balboa dancing
This is a not-so-wordless wednesday. I've mentioned before that I dance and that I love vintage dances like lindy hop, balboa, and blues. Well, here is a recent photo of me dancing in a competition for balboa. I'm wearing a 1940's floral dress with cognac brown ReMix shoes. I'm also wearing a fascinator in my hair that I made with my grandmother's vintage brooch. I competed in my very first competitions last weekend and it was terrifying and exhilarating! I did manage to take 3rd place in a Pro-Am competition (where a pro and an amateur dance together).

    1. HAHA, thank you! What kind of dancing do you do?
And as for the dress, believe me, taking the plunge to try is the hardest part about altering!

    1. Thanks! There is actually a lot of jazz in these vintage dances. I'm not great at it, but the better you are at incorporating jazz, the easier the dances would be!

    1. Haha! Thank you Kathleen! Believe me, my poor feet were dying at the end of that weekend! If you ever do get heels, these are great because they are a thick heel (reproduction 40's) and the large t-strap keeps them on your feet. I think dancing in any shoes for 4 days straight will do a number on your piggies! ;-)

  17. I have always wanted to learn how to dance professionally. Dancers have a grace about them that is beautiful to watch. On Dancing with the Stars next week, one of the dances is the Lindy Hop. :)

  19. Awesome! Yippie! I finally can put a picture to 'Jamie Chatterblossom' - woohoo! Nice... beautiful dress, too, you look like you just stepped out of a 40s film with Bogie :)
Dancing is so much fun. I never knew until I started dancing with my husband. We did Rumba, ChaCha, Waltz, Foxtrot and all those dances, for years until he hurt his foot (doing something else). So now we can't do it anymore until he - hopefully - heals. We weren't any good, but we enjoyed it - together, and that's the main thing. Hope we can get back to it one day.

    1. Thanks Claudia! I know, I rarely put any personal stuff on my blog. I'm a bit shy. There is one photo on my About page on my Etsy shop, but that is it. This was the first one otherwise!
I really hope you get to dance again soon. Sorry about the hubby's foot! My husband just had surgery on his shoulder and won't be able to dance til Feb., but he just started anyways, so he will just begin again that month. Dancing is my only form of exercise cause I hate working out, so I gotta dance! ;-)

  20. You look fantastic! I envy people who dance well - I'm so clumsy. I love your hair, too - wish I could see it more clearly because it looks like an interesting braid/updo. Congrats on placing!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thank you! My hair is actually in a twisted crown. Instead of a braid, I've twisted it around my head and into a circle on top. Not super hard, but it does make your arms tired after trying to do it! ;-)

    1. Thank you! Are you in the UK? If so, depending on where, they actually do! I just met a couple from England two weeks ago at that competition who just held a similar one in England. You never know, right?! It is a small community, so they just may have one of the dances near you! ;-)

  28. OM Gosh! My girlfriend is gonna die! LOL She LOVES lindyhop and takes lessons once a week. She has started buying all the clothes that go along with it too. It totally looks like a blast. We'd do it too if there was anywhere around here that taught it. Bummer : (

Congrats on your prize! I need to look up the difference between balboa and lindy. When my husband and I took lessons I was always too scared to go into a competition. We took Argentine and regular Tango but mostly Argentine.

So fun that I stumbled upon you in the blogosphere : )

    1. AAAHHHH!! So cool! LOL! The lindy community is a small one, but the balboa is a niche within a niche. ;-)
Balboa is actually my favorite. Here is a link to a video on youtube with one of the best in the world at it:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBvQPU7oais

I can't recall exactly where you live, but I thought it was Toronto? If so, there probably is lindy and balboa there. You just have to find them. Google Lindy or lindy hop toronto (or whatever your town is) and start searching lady! You would love it!

Argentine is a hard and beautiful dance. I haven't been able to give that one much time yet, but what I have done I have loved. It is such a gorgeous dance.

      Glad I found you too!!
