The Sunday Snag – Woodland Keeper

Vintage for a Woodland Walk #vintage #fashion #1940s #style #woodland

Last week, you saw my quintessentially autumn outfit (see here). Today I'm keeping in that same vein with another brown and green ensemble, this time a bit more formal, but still with that comfy fall feel. The fall does seem to work rather perfectly for slightly more formal attire being worn out of doors. It isn't hot, there is less humidity, and it seems almost as if the trees themselves were clad in fancier attire with their golden green leaves rustling for attention.

This outfit makes me feel a bit like you would find me sweetly chatting with birds and butterflies in the heart of the woods somewhere. Almost like a feminine woodland key keeper. I think it's the mix of lace and flowers, leaves and a gossamer veil. This lace dress is actually the first and only vintage lace garment (or lace garment of any kind) in my closet. I only have one other dress that has an accent of lace (see here), but otherwise my wardrobe is severely lacking in this ladylike fabric. I love lace, so I was surprised too! I think it may just be that nice quality lace pieces tend to be out of my price range, which makes them immediately go in the "look, but don't touch" portion of my shopping list.

This demure brown lace dress is from the 1940s and was part of a double purchase from Dronning Vintage during a sale they had in early August. I already featured the other dress I bought, seen here, in a previous Sunday Snag. I mainly wanted the other dress when I went shopping, but this shy sweetheart asked to come home with me too. She is a deep chocolate brown, which I think makes having an entirely lace dress much more versatile. The lace, if you look at the close up photo, is such a darling floral design too! Also, bonus, the lace is a super soft and worn in cotton. Typically, the older lace pieces that I've come into contact with have a tendency to be stiff, starched, and a tad scratchy, I'm assuming from age. You may be able to soak and line dry some stiffness away, but I've never owned a vintage lace piece to give that a try. This one is nice and soft though, so luckily I don't have to worry about that. The bust is ever so slightly to large for me, but I didn't want to mess with altering such a pretty lace, and it really doesn't bother me that much. I may, in the future, try to add a couple of darts to help that out.

The original belt was missing, but it was rather fun deciding on what to use to take its place! You could use almost any color ribbon/sash with this chocolate brown and it would work. I just decided on a green because I wanted to pair it will my hair accessory. My green sash is just the spare bit of hemline from a bridesmaid dress I had and altered. I didn't want to use a belt buckle for this dress, so I decided to add a little decorative floral piece instead. These blue and green velvet flowers are actual 1940s millinery pieces from my personal stash (it may be used in a hair accessory for my shop in the future!).

My fascinator, coincidentally, has the same green velvet leaf color, so it paired perfectly. The belt doesn't match exactly with the other greens in the outfit, but I don't care. I've never needed things to be matchy matchy and often enjoy when colors "clash" ever so slightly as I think it adds interest and texture to an outfit. The fascinator is a 1950s piece that I bought from a wonderful vintage shop in Pittsboro, NC called Beggars and Choosers (I'll be sharing photos and an interview about the shop & owner this Thursday!). I picked it up on a mad 15 min dash through the store (see story here). It was only $8! It has an entirely leaf construction (no flowers), the base is a pretty velvet bow, and the smallest peek-a-boo of green veiling softens the entire look.

The jewelry is super minimal this time round. I wanted the lace and millinery to be the stars of the show. However, this tiny tiny deer ring, "Keeper of the Wood" needed an outing in the autumn sunshine. You may not be able to see him (like I said, tiny tiny), but he is a strong stag and I thought he could be my woodland protector for the afternoon.

My shoes are marvelous! Nuf said. Okay, I guess I can say a bit more... I picked these beauties up while visiting my most bestest friend in Colorado. I asked her if we could go to a local vintage shop, Goldmine Vintage, while I was there and she very generously said yes. I purchased these gorgeous early 1940s brown suede heels at the end of that shop visit. The double buckle strap is both adorable and makes the shoes more stable and comfy for me to walk in.

Note: I did eat a mega huge breakfast/brunch filled with syrup and gravy right before going to said vintage shop. I do not recommend this. Not surprisingly, the shoes were the only thing I could fit into at the shop. However, the shop staff were incredibly helpful and patient with me as I asked to see a billion things just out of reach behind counters and hanging high on the wall. One thing behind the counter was a GORGEOUS late 1920s/early 1930s dress that they didn't let people try on (understandably). I asked if they could measure it for me and it was SO close, but I didn't want to pay for something that expensive if I didn't know 100% that it fit. Luckily, the shop lady took pity on me and quietly let me try it on with the help of my friend and many promises that I would be really really really careful. It was unbelievably beautiful and I'm soooo glad I got the chance to have it on me for a minute or two, but unfortunately it was a smidge to small on the hip so it had to wait for another lucky, but smaller, gal to take her home.

Isn't she cute?! This darling ring was made with an antique stamped brass button, circa 1880 to 1918, and pictures an itty bitty ladybug perched atop a leaf. I named her Dot for obvious reasons, but also because I've always loved that very vintage name (usually short for Dorothy or Dorothea). I'm actually pretty tempted to keep this for myself as I've always loved ladybugs, but alas, I'm in love with most of these wee buttons and I can't keep them all. I'm sure she will make someone else very happy too!

Friday Photo Swoon – Wrap My Love in Lace

Lillian Gish in Lace #1920s #fashion #lace #gish

In anticipation of this weekend, I'm sharing with you some overwhelmingly romantic images of lace adorned ladies. I purchased my very first vintage lace dress, which you will see on this Sunday's Snag, and I've been searching the web for examples of lace in eras past. It is not difficult to find them. Lace has been a staple of femininity (and masculinity at times!) for many many years now. Some of my very favorites are shown during the 1920s. They have such a lazy seductive quality, like being draped in head to toe lace is just another Friday afternoon for them. The sheer amount of hand work that would have gone into many of these fabrics is mind boggling! Every time I see lace pieces that have lasted from the Edwardian period, my heart melts and I can't believe anything so delicate stood the test of so many decades.

Do you wear lace? How do you use it in your wardrobe?

Thursday Thrill – Afternoon Adventure

Pittsboro, North Carolina 1939 #vintage #photograph #1930s

The weather has been just peachy the last few weeks! I desperately want to spend all my time out of doors and what better way to do so than on a mini afternoon adventure with a friend! A most lovely friend, Holly, told me about a sale being put on by a vintage/antique store in the nearby town of Pittsboro. You may remember that this is also the town where my husband and I stayed at the most fabulous B&B for our 10th anniversary (see here). The hubs and I never went into the little city center however, so I was excited to see it.

The sale, which was the initial draw to take the adventure, was being held "fire sale" style in a parking lot near the city center and down the street from the actual shop, Beggars and Choosers. We got there in the morning on a Sunday and there were some furniture pieces spread out and two or three large racks of clothing. A lovely young lady named Mary was overseeing the sale and she told us that all the clothes were $1. "Wait, one dollar?!", I said to no one in particular as I ran for the rack with drool trailing behind me. I don't think I even noticed where or if my friend had joined me, but luckily, she is a hunter like me and probably responded the same way.

I started pawing through the racks; 1950s high waist linen shorts? Let me get out my measuring tape to check the measurements. This is a great tip ladies! You can't always try on garments, so knowing your measurements and bringing a soft measuring tape can really save you! Shorts may be tight, according to measurements, but for $1 I'll take the risk. 1940s cotton dress with beautiful lucite buttons? Mine. 50s house dress with stains that may come out? Yup. 60s red and white gingham skirt suit that is too big? Absolutely. I can at least alter the skirt and have a cute summer piece to pair with other tops. 50s silk shantung mandarin blouse? Throw that beauty over my shoulder. 1940s blue knit skirt with a few moth holes? I don't mind. I'll mend that baby!

All said and done, I got 8 pieces of vintage clothing for $8. F*@# yeah!! I only had one piece that didn't work for me when I got home (50s knit blouse), but that is no biggie and I was pretty stoked with that haul. Plus, remember how I said the young lady overseeing the sale was lovely? Well, she very keenly noticed my dilated pupils and rack ravaging and very sweetly offered to open up the shop (which was closed that Sunday) just for us! How cool is that?! She could only give us 15 mins, but that was more than generous of her and now I would get the chance to run around a vintage shop I'd never been to before! Yippee!

She said she would meet us in an hour or so at the shop, so Holly and I had to kill some time. We decided to walk around Pittsboro's super cute downtown and window shop, as all the shops were closed that Sunday. There were such cute places that we would have to come back to when the town was open. We saw a soda shop, some antique shops, and a fun woodworking place with a random chicken on chair. One shop even had an old photo of its building front from 1939 (top photo) where some pretty fantastically dressed ladies were milling about and chatting in their snazzy outfits.

After walking for like 2 1/2 mins, we could clearly justify going to the local bakery that was wafting deliciously aromatic goodies our way. Right on the main drag, The Phoenix Bakery was staring at us from across the street, calling our names and enticing us to come munch on some pastries while we waited to shop.

We opened the bakery shop door and were greeted by a darling gal who turned out to be one of the main cake designers. Her name is Virginia, she is lovely, and she makes awesomeness. Plus, big bonus points, she said they don't use any artificial gunk in their treats AND their supplies come from local farms, including eggs, milk, and organic flour. Score! Love this place already!

I picked out a Boston Creme doughnut (my stomach is growling as I type this) and Holly picked out something that I don't care about because I'm eating my Boston Creme doughnut. It was uber delicious, creamy, sweet, and with just the right amount of chocolate frosting (that amount being a lot). We got to sit outside on a beautiful Sunday morning, eat yummy pastries, and wait to go on a short shopping adventure! Can't beat that!

We met up with Mary later at the antique shop and she opened the door to a three story vintage treasure trove! 15 mins?! That's all we get?! I could just stand in the doorway and ogle for 15 mins! Nope this wouldn't work, we needed to schedule another time to come when we had hours. We didn't waste the 15 mins though. I ran to the 3rd floor (clothing), and picked up a pretty leaf fascinator (which you'll see on this Sunday's Snag!). I also picked up a 1950s/60s black leather purse (kinda like a medical doctor bag shape) for $5 that works perfectly as my new camera bag.

We chatted excitedly with Mary and we made plans to visit the shop on a coming Sunday where the town of Pittsboro holds a First Sunday event from 12pm-4pm. Next week, I'll be sharing my adventure in that shop and wonderful interview with the shop owner, Pam! Make sure to check back in, this lady is awesome!
