Friday Photo Swoon – Suit Up, Ladies

Highly contoured 1950s suit #vintage #fashion #1950s #suit

Look at that shaping! And the tailoring! And the contours! My oh my, what a good suit can do! A classic suit to most of us would be recognizable back to the 1940s, but they had versions of it before that too. They can simply nod to the masculine or can break the barrier altogether. I happen to think women in sharply tailored men's suits is particularly sexy. But if you want to add a feminine touch, there are plenty of options in the women's suit section too. There are flowy representations in the 30s with hints of the tailored suit and tie look prevalent in men. There are crisply tailored but still contoured 1940s examples. And then there are the hyper curved 1950s suits that require much wiggle and even more girdle. The 1960s got a bit boxier, but even so, what a modern gal deems a modern suit has been in fashion for quite some time.

  1. Great commentary and pictures! I like to think that women have been wearing the classic bodice and skirt combo (which would turn into the suit) since about the 1850's, but they didn't start wearing shirt waists until the early 1900's. Men's suits haven't really changed much since pants became popular in the early 1800's. Isn't fashion history interesting?

  15. Oh gracious, I've died and gone to vintage heaven. I'm telling you if I had a past life, I bought some of these suits at their source department stores and I know I had a great collection of hats and umbrellas to go with them:). There is just something about a vintage suit that I can't quite explain but I get caught up in their details. They are just works of art and the ladies looked so glamourous. As I was looking through these marvelous images, I also thought of a common theme of strength. There is something very powerful and chic about the right vintage suit.

  16. So long as I can find suits that fit me well (quite the challenge, but beyond worth it!), I have zero problem following that directive with a massive smile on my face. There are few vintage garments I love anywhere near as much as I do a sharply tailored late 30s - 1950s skirt suit.
